Software packages and support

Which Software

  • Do you really need software?

Often it sounds like a good idea. But if you use a manual system and are organised, sometimes that will do.

However, if you do have a volume of transactions and know how to use technology, it sounds like you may benefit from using Accounting and Payroll Software.

There is a wide variety of options and it is seldom they meet every need you have.

Go exploring with eyes open and a best fit policy in mind.

You need to consider ownership and on-going costs of the software and any ''add-ons'' you purchase. Make sure you invest in some training.

Talk to your Accountant and utilise their knowledge. They may be able to supply software packages at discounted rates.

At the end of the day, the software is your choice and must meet your needs.

Accounting Software

There are a lot of Accounting Software packages in the market place, picking the right one can be a nightmare.

Talk to similar businesses and see what they use. Make sure you ask about the benefits and drawbacks. Also talk to your Accountant.

Some of the main players in the NZ Accounting Software Market are:

  • Xero
  • MYOB
  • Reckon
  • Cash Manager

Most providers have a range of software. They range from simple to more complex solutions. These can be scaled up or down, depending on your situation.

Payroll Software

Some people are still happy to use wage books.

We would recommend using payroll software if you have more than 3 or 4 staff. This helps keep track of employee entitlements like: annual leave; sick days; and alternative days.

There are on-line providers out there, but be aware of charges.

No matter what system you use, the recording of time worked is still the key for payroll.
